Today we are talking about Probiotics. This is one of my favorite topics because we are obsessed with talking about the gut here at Bloom. As a naturopathic doctor, I always say that the gut is the center of the universe for your whole body. A crazy fact is that we have more bacteria in our body than we do human cells, which is totally insane!
That means that all of the bacteria inside of us are either “good” bacteria, which do a lot of beneficial things for us, or “bad” bacteria. We do a really amazing stool test here, where you submit stool and saliva, to assess any overgrowth of bad bacteria such as E. coli or Proteus, and we will look for Candida and yeasts, and even parasites.
What we know about probiotics is that they can crowd out the “bad” bacteria, as well as helping us absorb certain nutrients, such as B vitamins. They are a huge part of our immune system. We usually are replenishing many types of strains, such as Lactobacillus, which is the most popular one, Bifidobacterium, and my personal favorite, Saccharomyces boulardii. I’m obsessed with this one because I see so much Candida overgrowth when we run these tests, and Saccharomyces boulardii loves to eat yeast and candida. It also increases secretory IgA, which improves the immune system of the whole gut, which is awesome. So, I’m pretty obsessed with probiotics!
